When I was reading the story I kept on thinking that when people think about an egalitarian society, most people think about “well now we all need to wear rags and drive ugly cars”. I keep on thinking that part of the allure of “luxury lifestyles” for some people is that others can’t live their lives.
Reality is that no one can truly live our lives. But beyond that I see two points. One: if they would make cars that are all great, no one would really get to drive ugly poorly built cars. The second point is the importance of knowing ourselves. For someone who loves let’s say wine, a very good one may be worthy, but for someone who doesn’t any fermented grape juice would do.
Problem is because most people don’t know what they want, they want everything and nothing at all. In the sense that any TV commercial drives them either to buy a TV or travel halfway around the world for no real good reason. Nothing at all because all the wants we have we are not willing to work for that.
Anyway, your article keep me thinking.
Thank you for your thought provoking ideas.
