Well, interestingly this happened in Mexico. In the US they barely acknowledge my existence.

My though was that there was a sort of rivalry (although I don't think this is the correct term), or a sort of challenging feeling among the authorities in Mexico.

In a way, procedural speaking it is completely understandable, they have many people traveling to the country with goods they purchase cheaply in the US (think electronic, brand items like maybe Levi's jeans or Victoria Secret's original apparel that they can sell in Mexico because originals are more expensive there. So, yes, there is a potential for tax evasion that I guess is what they are trying to prevent.

However I felt there was also an underlying current going on. In a sense not directed towards me but towards the Mexican people who are now residents in the US. A sort of resentment towards their compatriots who left the country.

Of course there are multiple factors involved in someone's decision to leave and one must not discount the lack of opportunities in our home countries. But also for us, the ones who left our countries we must not forget there were people who stayed behind trying to make not only a living but in many occasions trying to transform the country in that ideal that we have in our minds.

Thank you for stopping by, Gurpreet. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I am super tired and anxious lately. Not much that can be done. But I appreciate your presence.
