The case for silence

Within silence, I can hear myself.
I don’t listen to those voices from TV
telling me to buy and consume
to live the life they want me to live
so they can live the life they think they deserve.
Even the sound of cars passing by
is a better deal than the voices on TV
telling me to shut up, since they want to talk,
to dominate the discourse in my head
my desires, my wants. In silence, I hear myself.
