Maybe they are afraid of losing their individuality and merging into the other. Seems to me that for many it’s hard to let go, and so many others I feel they exercise it as an act of possession instead of sharing/communion.
The most likely answer is that as a society we are somehow stoic and we like to suffer. Sacrifice ourselves to jobs we don’t like and then we live and live lives dictated by others.
Then, sex is to seek pleasure, communion and a certain abandonment of the self while entrusting the other, freedom in a sense. Vulnerability. And many don’t know what to do with it.
