Maybe that’s the same with me, not being born in the US. However while reading your story I started to consider if it is a defense mechanism to not see myself as Other. I mean, it’s not easy to walk around knowing all the time I technically don’t belong, and it may be an ill fitting defense mechanism to avoid considering myself brown/black. If I’m not brown/black, I’m not The Other, I belong.
