I’ve been in Costa Rica briefly a couple of times. Last a few years ago when I crossed the border from Nicaragua where my wife is from for a short excursion. It is a beautiful and safe country. My first time there was when I was migrating to the US, I had a long layover at the airport. I didn’t even left the terminal, but I truly considered staying there instead of making it to Los Ángeles.

So lucky you have family on the ground, although I love to explore, I believe that when you go to a place where you have friends or family, you do feel more like a local, which is always a great feeling to me, especially when traveling.
