I figured you were having too much fun riding!

Riding is actually fairly good there. There are lots of traffic lights about a hundred meters from one another, so it is very hard for cars to get too much speed. I think this contributed to my perception of being a good cyclist growing up, that I used to go almost as fast as the cars.
And yes, there are a fair amount of people commuting by bicycle. Probably not as many as in Europe, but more than in the US.
