Even if you would have said something, I don't think it would have changed much. In addition to the psychological dependence there is the issue of the organic dependence when it come down to alcohol.

I personally don't drink much, maybe once or twice when I travel and I've been spared chemical dependencies. I'm not too sure what it is that drives people to alcohol/chemical dependence. Fitting in? Dull the edge of reality for the ones who see too much, feel too much? I mean, the fact that it is unusual to establish much of a level of connection with most people in a world that favors self-centeredness.

Maybe it is the fact that is difficult to reconcile a beautiful world with the fear and enormity it imposes. Maybe it is that we often don't feel seen. Or maybe it is that we want to invite spirits to dwell in us that if we are not careful they will take over our bodies.
